Professional Development

Ever since the govt. is coming forward with education policies, the most important focus is learner centred education. But in practice it is still a far cry. Our education, teaching practices, strategies seem to be dogmatic and obsolete. Perhaps the reason is lack of proper professional development programmes for teachers. Most of our teachers do not possess necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to provide quality education. They teach in their own style and hardly make efforts to sharpen their saw. The professional courses for teachers have failed to produce real teachers. If a detailed study is conducted to analyse this, it will certainly find that more than 70 percent of them are teachers  by chance and not by choice. This is perhaps very unfortunate for our education. We need teachers who opt the profession by choice.  Research, experience and studies reveal that there are three important requirements for the teachers to teach effectively. Knowledge, skill and attitude. Thorough

Effective Teaching Strategies

Gone are the days of dogmatic and obsolete teaching styles, methods, tools and techniques.we need to update ourselves and enrich and equip with the latest inventions and innovations in teaching skills. The following findings are based on my own teaching, training and educational experiences. Hope that these days the teachers can find some time to go through the same and sharpen their teaching skills.
Teachers today need to address the following three challenges
1. What to teach?  ie the content
2. How to teach? ie the method

3. Whom to teach? ie client/ student
The answer is PLANNING for content
PREPARATION for method and
PRESENTATION for client
I simply put them in  P3
We may also consider these three skills as KNOWLEDGE, SKILL and ATTITUDE
These three are the most essential and important requirements to become an effective teacher. Therefore, an effective teacher is one who possesses thorough knowledge of subject, knows how to teach and is committed to teach. There are the teachers whose subject knowledge is good but don't know how to teach. There are the teachers who know the subject as well as how to teach but don't want to teach, lack attitude and commitment.
The above three skills can further be described as COMPETENCE (knowledge) CONFIDENCE( Skill) and
COMMITMENT (Attitude)
We may put it as C3
These qualities of an effective teacher can be termed as qualities of HEAD, HAND and HEART ie H3
Further the research says that the learning can be facilated through inventive, innovative and interactive  teaching ie I 3. An effective teacher must be able to invent something new, innovate and create interactions in the class.
While dealing with content the teacher must divide it in three  parts ie,
Must be taught
Should be taught
Could be taught
M. S C
What ever is prescribed must be taught as it is important from exam point of view.
Should be taught_ may not be important for exams but may be relevant for competition.
Could be taught_ may be important in our day to day life or for general awareness.
As far as the learner is concerned, my experience divides them in three categories ie
Can do
Can't do
Don't do
Means bright, underachievers and careless.
An effective teacher is one who is able to help all.

I do hope that the teachers will be prepared with these strategies in the new academic session.
