Professional Development

Ever since the govt. is coming forward with education policies, the most important focus is learner centred education. But in practice it is still a far cry. Our education, teaching practices, strategies seem to be dogmatic and obsolete. Perhaps the reason is lack of proper professional development programmes for teachers. Most of our teachers do not possess necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to provide quality education. They teach in their own style and hardly make efforts to sharpen their saw. The professional courses for teachers have failed to produce real teachers. If a detailed study is conducted to analyse this, it will certainly find that more than 70 percent of them are teachers  by chance and not by choice. This is perhaps very unfortunate for our education. We need teachers who opt the profession by choice.
Research, experience and studies reveal that there are three important requirements for the teachers to teach effectively. Knowledge, skill and attitude. Thorough Knowledge of subject , teaching skills both hard and soft and willingness , commitment /positive attitude make a perfect ,complete and effective teacher. It is often seen that a teacher knows his subject but doesn't know how to teach and lacks teaching skills .There is another teacher who knows his subject and also knows how to teach but doesn't want to teach. Lacks commitment /attitude. Therefore all above three are the important pillars of effective teaching. These are the best tools and ornaments of teachers. If these can be cultivated and imbibed during teachers training courses, country will have the best teachers, yielding the best results producing the best students and above all the best citizens and human beings. All this can happen through off the job and on the job effective training programmes.
