Ever since the govt. is coming forward with education policies, the most important focus is learner centred education. But in practice it is still a far cry. Our education, teaching practices, strategies seem to be dogmatic and obsolete. Perhaps the reason is lack of proper professional development programmes for teachers. Most of our teachers do not possess necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to provide quality education. They teach in their own style and hardly make efforts to sharpen their saw. The professional courses for teachers have failed to produce real teachers. If a detailed study is conducted to analyse this, it will certainly find that more than 70 percent of them are teachers  by chance and not by choice. This is perhaps very unfortunate for our education. Teacher like QUALITIES

Teacher is the kingpin in any Education system. An important role is played by the teacher in institutional planning as well as wholesome personality development of child. Teacher is a demonstrator, dispenser of information, task master, disciplinarian, inspirer, surrogate parent, therapist, persuader, stimulator of inquiry and above all a role model for the students.
But who is a perfect teacher? A perfect teacher is one who possesses the following:- 
1. Knowledge – Thorough knowledge of subject, related/relevant content and general awareness.
2. Skill – Teaching methodology, inviting attention/participation.
3. Attitude – Positive to self and significant others.
In other words a perfect and an effective teacher is one who is competent enough to comprehend and respond the following questions –
1. What to teach? – Content – Teacher should be able to systematically plan the content to be taught, prepare it accordingly and disseminate confidently.
2. How to teach? – Method – Suitable to the content through which the students are easily able to learn.
3. Whom to teach? – Client – Student – Must understand the child, his/her ability to learn and understand the level of his/her achievement.
On the basis of the above, some of the Teacher Like Qualities (TLQs) are listed below:- 
1. Personal Qualities:- A good teacher is not merely a person but a personality. He/She should be humble, docile, energetic, cheerful, empathetic, caring, person of integrity and respectable.
2. Academic Qualities:- Good knowledge of subject equipped and enriched with teaching skills, general awareness and fluency in expression.
3. Professional Qualities:- Thrust for knowledge, commitment towards profession constant learner, suitably trained.
A lamp can never light another lamp unless it continues to burn.
4. Leadership Qualities:- Ability to guide, motivate develop positive attitude, imbibe good values, a catalyst, role model.

All teachers must understand –
A poor teacher tells,
An average teacher explains
A good teacher demonstrates
A great teacher inspires.
The above TLQs make a great teacher and a great teacher doesn’t do different things but does the things differently.

Important Duties of Teacher:- 
Teaching duties, Planning duties, Organizing duties, Supervisory duties, Reporting duties, Recording duties, Guidance/Counselling duties & Evaluating duties etc.

Common Weaknesses:- Insufficient subject knowledge and skills, negative/casual attitude, negligence, reluctance to use innovations, bad habits, bad manners, shirking of work, short temper, unaffectionate etc.

1. Vidyarthi Nistha – Commitment to students – A friend, philosopher, foster parent and guide.
2. Samaj Nistha – Commitment to society/parents – To prepare a responsible child and good human being.
3. Udyog Nistha – Commitment to profession – To grow professionally, upgrades knowledge/skills from time to time and keep in touch with the latest research, innovations and experimentations in the subject.
4. Mulya Nistha – Commitment to values – Imbibe good values in students.
5. Utkrishth Nistha – Commitment to excellence – i.e. to prepare him/her to achieve excellence in every sphere.
